Path — New Voice, New Generation The sixth edition of Mostly Cello Festival in Seoul, hosted by Friends of Music, will be held over three days from August 10 to 12, 2026. The theme of the 2026 festival is "Path — New Voice, New Generation." Rather than simply introducing 20th- and 21st-century cello music as difficult, experimental contemporary work, this festival focuses on showing how different voices meet, form relationships, and together create music. To that end, the program presents works of various instrumentation, including solo pieces, capturing the process by which a single instrument begins as an independent voice, meets other instruments, forms relationships with multiple parts, and expands into a larger musical structure. The musical principle running through this festival is counterpoint. Counterpoint is a way in which distinct melodies preserve their individual character while listening to, imitating, and responding to one another to form a unified piece of music. No single voice erases another; instead, each part maintains its independence while forming relationships with the others — a principle that directly aligns with the festival's theme. The contemporary music the 2026 Mostly Cello Festival aims to present is not music that emphasizes unfamiliar sounds or new techniques alone, but music that shows how different melodies and timbres, generations, and performers can coexist and find harmony on a single stage.
