“Meet in Seoul the 31 Painters Who Captured Montmartre’s Most Dazzling Era on Canvas.” Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was the first to recognize the hidden talent of Suzanne Valadon, who was then working as a model for the painters of her day. He gave her the artist’s name “Suzanne” and guided her toward a life as an artist, an encounter remembered as one of the most beautiful moments in art history. For the first time in Korea, this exhibition brings together the art of Valadon, who rose from model to master, and the work of Lautrec, who set her on that path. While past Toulouse-Lautrec exhibitions have focused mainly on his prints, this exhibition features a large number of oil paintings and drawings from the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, the artist’s hometown in France, offering a complete view of his art. Highlights from the Weisman & Michel Collection, together with Maurice Utrillo’s painting Place Pigalle (1910), which the Musée de Montmartre is presenting exclusively in Seoul, bring the exhibition to a total of 111 works. Visitors can also enjoy works by contemporaries who brought Montmartre to life, including Jules Chéret, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, and Louis Anquetin. The exhibition takes visitors on a walk through Montmartre in nine scenes, beginning with the fateful meeting of the two masters and moving through nights at cafés, cabarets, and the circus to a new way of seeing the female body. Presented by Gaudium Associates, organized by [GA Art], and supported by the Embassy of France in Korea, this is an official exhibition celebrating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France. It will have its world premiere at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul from November 7, 2026, to February 9, 2027, before traveling to Tokyo.
