A day spent by a woman struggling to forget her past after released from prison in order to turn her life around. Pulitzer Award winning Marsha Norman’s first play directed by Ko Seon-woong. “…so honest and direct and the performances are so incandescent that' it all seems very simple” – New York Times Winner of Outer Critics Circle Award “Getting Out” is a story about a woman who gets released after 8 years in prison. This is the very first play written by Marsha Norman who is well known for “Night, Mother” in Korea. Arlene is trying to start a new life in a humble apartment back in Louisville after released from prison. Although she even changed her name from Arlie to find her way in the present, flashbacks of her past keep getting in her way and makes her go back to the life that she doesn’t want to repeat. Those with whom she was battling come back to her on the first day after prison and trample the freedom she finally earned; the lecherous former prison guard, the unfeeling, slatternly mother, and the pimp ex-boyfriend. Would Arlene ever be able to start a new life over? In the end, this play also offers no simple answer, as with life, but it steers us to have so much compassion for Arlene’s fight for her life against all sorts of odds. After the long-served time, she only ends up being in a small apartment no different from prison. Would she be able to break it through? One can imagine that she can. She can confront and overcome all the obstacles before her and start a completely new life. One should be punished for something he/she did wrong, but if he/she gets punished enough, he/she should be given another chance to live a normal life. (311) 주최: 세종문화회관
