01. Hanyang Pungryu Part 1. Hyangdang Gyoju | Part 2. Hamnyeongjigok Hyangdang Gyoju ( 鄕唐交奏 ) is music adapted from Sangnyeongsan of the wind ensemble Yeongsan Hoesang to accompany the dance of the court jeongjae. As its name says, it was played by Korean hyangak instruments together with dangak instruments transmitted from Song China, and it stands as a symbol of court music in which two different musical cultures come into harmony. This tradition of fusion carried on into the modern era. In the 1920s and 1930s, seeking both to inherit traditional music and to find new possibilities in it, musicians attempted seonyang hapju ( 鮮洋合奏 ), an ensemble combining Korean and Western instruments, and works including Yeongsan Hoesang were heard in a new sound. Today's collaboration stands in the same historical line. Just as each age took in new instruments and new sensibilities to carry pungnyu forward, this programme reads the melody of Hyangdang Gyoju anew through a contemporary ensemble and dance. Together with Hamnyeongjigok, which follows, it presents a new court pungnyu. 02. Dung Dang Dung Dang When "dung dang dung dang," the vocalized sound of the ajaeng, rings out over the byeoldalgeori rhythmic cycle, the players build a single current out of improvised sinawi. The music falls quiet for a moment, as though catching its breath, then drives on through the hwimori cycle toward its climax. This is a work alive with the energy of improvisation, in which the players pass melodies to one another and layer them. 03. Chant of the Water Jajinhannip began as accompaniment for gagok and over time developed into an independent instrumental piece. As its name suggests — jajin (fast), han (great), ip (melody) — the music has a flowing line and a dynamic movement, and it is here recomposed in a contemporary sensibility.
