The Sejong Summer Festival “Groove” Ahn Eun Me Company “Dancing Grandmothers”

In October 2010, I (Ahn Eun Me) suddenly found myself to be traveling across the country wherever my feet take me. To document the simple rhythms and movements of those who have never learned how to dance, that was the goal of this project. Their dance was full of vitality and energy in the anticipation of their second life, with no slight hint of loneliness and regret for their life of adversity that they have gone through the 20th and 21st centuries. This project of their body movements deserves to be called ‘the history of the 20th century written in the body language.’ Now we gather all the scattered traces of the history that their body remembers and pay homage to them all. And we intend to meet and document more dancing grandmothers after this. We will go even further to the world outside of Korea and keep documenting those grandmothers as well as their mothers, through which the history of the mothers will eventually be linked together. Ahn Eun Me Company Founded by choreographer and dancer Ahn Eum Me in 1988, the Ahn Eun Me Company has performed extensively throughout the world including Europe and the US. Ahn Eum Me’s dance characterized by delicate, extraordinary body language, mysterious colors, dynamic energy with no redundance attached, and a great sense of humor expresses aspiration to communicate with the world beyond the Korean tradition. The Ahn Eun Me Company is a private dance company that promotes to the world the Korean contemporary dance on its own terms. Ahn Eun Me first proved in “Chun” and “Symphoca Princess Bari” the potential of the Korean tradition as an important creative element and garnered critical acclaims in Europe, touring many cities as the first Korean private dance company in 2006 as well as performing at the Edinburgh International Festival as part of the Festival’s official programs in 2011.
