Creative Works Series: New Aesthetics of Pungnyu

A new pungnyu, written with today's sensibility. Inspired by Danwon Kim Hong-do's Wolyaseonyudo , this creative project reimagines the imagery of nature and water through today's Korean traditional orchestra. Each year, it presents new works on a single theme, moving from the discovery of new compositions to expanded re-performances, and the accumulation of repertoire — a creative flow that opens new possibilities for contemporary Korean traditional orchestra music. Nature, Water, and Folk Tales Since ancient times, nature and water have carried diverse stories filled with people's lives and imagination. This concert reinterprets these folk tales through the perspectives and musical languages of contemporary composers. Four new works selected through open competition begin from a shared theme, yet each unfolds a different folk tale — Jeju's waterfalls and Yeongdeung Halmang, Heaven Lake atop Baekdusan Mountain, the legends of dragons and tigers — through distinct musical languages, presenting a rich landscape of Korean traditional orchestra music. The program also features an expanded re-performance of last year's outstanding open-competition work and a new piece by resident composer Goun Lee, illustrating how today's new works evolve into tomorrow's Korean traditional orchestra repertoire. With the addition of celebrated masterpieces of Korean traditional orchestra music, new compositions and classics meet on one stage — completing the unique flow that only New Aesthetics of Pungnyu offers.
