Ensemble WIRO’s Sound Maker Project Series I Fusion:

행사 소개

Modern music is difficult to understand. Thus, it is more difficult to interact with the audiences through modern music. However, Namsadang Nori is an interactive art form where a joker constantly engages with the audiences to elicit responses, performed in an open space to allow anyone to enjoy the show. The ensemble decided to organize “MODERN NAMSADANG” with the hope that contemporary music could feel more accessible if it communicated with the audiences and brought the same excitement as Namsadang Nori. “MODERN NAMSADANG” seeks to reinterpret three out of the six madangs (episodes) of Namsadang Nori - Pungmul, Beona (dish spinning), Deotboegi (mask dance), and Deolmi (puppet play) - through modern music. Contemporary music is a difficult and non-mainstream art form. Over the past seven years, the ensemble has performed more than 300 original Korean compositions, reflecting deeply on how to make contemporary music, often neglected, more accessible and enjoyable for audiences. This reflection has led to the creation of the Sound Maker Project in 2019. The Sound Maker Project is a curated performance that integrates contemporary music commissioned and premiered by Ensemble Wiro with other fields such as art, theater, history, and science. Through performances that combines contemporary music with diverse fields, the project has worked to lower the barriers to entry for audiences, making contemporary music more accessible and it known to the public as an art form. Through these efforts, the Sound Maker Project could secure funding from the Arts Council Korea for three years, from 2024 to 2026, ensuring stable production support. In 2024, under the theme of The Charm of Art, the ensemble will showcase high-quality composite art that blends contemporary music with other artistic genres, including Poet and Painter with literature and painting, Music of Light with laser art, and Modern Namsadang with Namsadang Nori.
