That’s why I didn’t even change my resident registration number.” Saekja “What I’m trying to say is ‘Don’t cheat!‘” Terry “To say that I’m too young to understand happiness…” Nabi Synopsis The androgynous Yun-Kim Myong-woo is the owner of a lesbian bar that has been around for two decades. Terry is a gorgeous bulldyke. Saekja is a male-to-female transgender who has been performing on stage for more than 30 years. Nabi is a firefighter and a mother of a transgender. The producers of DRAG x Namjangsinsa meet four people from different walks of life while tracing women’s and LGBTQ history based on the question, “Where did the middle-aged queers go?” The four share their stories and ask, “How is ‘women’ defined? What is the significance of ‘self-identity’ in the lives of minorities?” A lives of women and other minorities become legacies for their next generations. Their stories of what it was like “back then” get people wondering about humanity. The message to “live fearlessly” will perhaps inspire people to unite and stand against hate, which seems rampant across the world today. DRAG x Namjangsinsa exposes the violence committed by society demanding individuals to identify themselves based on the gender dichotomy. Drag is a form of art that catches the eye, as it goes against the expectations of society in relation to how one should behave and dress based on their sex. It is now done more openly, unlike in the past when drag dressing was confined to clandestine performances put on by those belonging to a specific community. For instance, Choe Hyon-suk, the first-ever National Assembly election candidate to come out as a homosexual, dressed in drag during her election campaign. There are now many people staging and participating in drag performances, posting photographs and videos of themselves dressed in drag on social media and being open about their queer identity.
