Songs Sung as They Are: [Minyo Samcheolli] Returns. Heemoon Lee is a sorikkun (traditional singer) who has made the feminine textures and techniques of the voice his own, in a man’s body. Where did the songs I learned come from? Minyo Samcheolli begins with that simple question, tracing back through the history of Gyeonggi minyo, the folk songs of the Gyeonggi region that we have long taken for granted as “tradition.” The lives and songs of the female singers who defined their era, Gyeonggi minyo as it changed amid the tide of modernization, and the male singers who had to find their own place within it. Through the life of his mother, the Gyeonggi minyo master singer Jurang Ko, Lee moves freely back and forth through that history, playfully and audaciously revealing the hidden side of a familiar “tradition.” When it premiered, Minyo Samcheolli was praised as one of the most striking works in Lee’s Deep Love series. In 2026, a bolder Minyo Samcheolli is being rewritten. Alongside Lee in the role of Jurang Ko, Seungtae Shin, who made a powerful impression as the master singer Bichwi Ahn in the premiere, returns to the Minyo Samcheolli stage. Now that the two singers, each having developed his own voice over the years, are reunited, Minyo Samcheolli does not simply re-create the stage of the past. Instead, it turns “tradition” on its head once again with a sensibility of today. Were the folk songs we know really always this way? This is the story of people who sang as they were and sang as they lived. Heemoon Lee’s Minyo Samcheolli , returning anew. 주최: 세종문화회관
