Pansori Les Miserables: Ninety Nine’s (Imperfect) People

There are always poor people. They never disappear across time or place and they are all in the same boat! [About the Work] Pansori Les Mis é rables, which is adapted from Victor Hugo's original ‘ Les Mis é rables, is a full pansori made by MNH (Mouth and Hands) Studio that combines three partial soris (small stories for theater) into one. The three partial soris, which have been completed after 3 years of production, present each of the characters ’ (the woman Fantine, young man Marius, and child Gavroche) lives in different formats. Conceived from ‘ the process in which a traditional pansori sung in its entirety is created ’ , this work shows how several small soris are combined into a longer narrative. In Victor Hugo's original ‘ Les Miserables ’ , known widely as the story of Jean Valjean, who spends 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, we witness the stories of poor people living various lives in an irrational society. With France as its setting, the original work reveals the irrationality of the old system by shedding light on poor people ’ s lives and shows the historical implications of a failed revolution. Thus, presenting a statement of revolution for a new world when it (the original book) was first published, Les Miserables has since been loved by many people for its emphasis on the salvation of life through faith and love. Basing its overall plot on human salvation, accusations of an irrational system, the anger of the poor, and the narrative of revolution, ‘ Pansori Les Miserables: Nighty Nine ’ s People ’ has been reborn as a pansori by MNH Studio with a new adaptation that uses the analogy of “ Life is a Boat ” . Lost and struggling to make a living, the people drift in the open sea, doing their painful best in their own places in hopes of a better life. But they are all anxious about their constant drifting.
