In the 19th century, the European art world began to move away from long-established traditions and embrace new transformations. Artists broke free from academic painting, which had focused on depicting historical and mythological subjects, and instead placed the realities of life — what they directly observed and experienced — at the center of their work. This shift enabled artists to view the world from new perspectives, fundamentally transforming modes of pictorial expression, establishing artistic individuality, and marking a significant turning point toward the emergence of modernism. This exhibition presents masterpieces by European artists who captured this pivotal moment of transformation. Featuring 52 works from the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts, spanning from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, the exhibition traces a trajectory from Gustave Courbet, a pioneer of Realism, to Impressionists such as Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas; to Post-Impressionists including Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne; and onward to 20th-century innovators such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Wassily Kandinsky. It highlights the experiments of artists who challenged tradition and forged new paths toward modernism, illuminating the evolving language of painting they created. The exhibition will be held at the Sejong Museum of Art from May 28 to August 23, 2026.
