PROGRAM Arensky, String Quartet No. 2 in a minor, Op. 35 Borodin, String Trio in g minor Glazunov, String Quintet in C major, Op. 39 Program Notes Though he was a student of Rimsky-Korsakov’s, Arensky was under more influences of Tchaikovsky and Chopin whose composing styles are quite different from his teacher. Arensky is better known for his outstanding chamber music compositions and his string quartet No.2 requires two cellos instead of two violins which is quite unusual instrumentation. The first cello, in particular, requires an exceptional technique from the player and the overall calm and profound sentiment of the work evokes the emotion of autumn. And the theme of the second movement is especially famous as the original tune for “Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky for string orchestra.” The instrumentation of Borodin’s string trio in G minor is also unusual in that it requires two violins and one cello. And it belongs to his early works too as with string trio in G major and it takes a form of variation with a theme of the Russian folksong “What have I done to hurt you?” The concert wraps up with Glazunov’s only string quintet. With great admiration for Schubert in mind, the composer takes the same instrumentation of Schubert’s string quintet, which is a string quartet plus cello instead of viola. Cello is the instrument that Glazunov had his special affection for. The opening Andante tune from the second cello in the third movement is notably impressive.
