This special exhibition brings together in one place more than 130 Goryeo Buddhist paintings, recreated by the Venerable Wolje Hyedam on the foundation of long research and traditional technique. Through works that include a Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara, a Five Hundred Arhats, and a Descent of Amitabha reaching five metres in height, as well as images of buddhas and bodhisattvas, arhat paintings, and byeonsangdo, visitors can encounter the fine line drawing, the depth of colour, and the brilliant gold patterning particular to Goryeo Buddhist painting. The exhibition casts fresh light on the majestic form of our national cultural heritage and on the value of its traditional making. This exhibition presents more than 130 Goryeo Buddhist paintings recreated by the Venerable Wolje Hyedam on the foundation of long research and traditional making. It comprises a Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara and a Five Hundred Arhats five metres in height, a newly created Descent of Amitabha, and a range of further works including images of buddhas and bodhisattvas, arhat paintings, and byeonsangdo. Visitors can look closely at the formal beauty and the making of Goryeo Buddhist painting: its precise line drawing, its depth of colour, its layering of natural pigments, and its fine gold patterning.
