ABOUT THE TOPPING The Seoul Metropolitan Dance Theatre’s The Topping series started in 2015, and as the title suggests, it is an ambiguous meaning and expression where (THE) also means “more” in Korean, and topping is a noun that means the finishing work for taste and decoration when making dishes or cookies, while also an adjective meaning “the best.” This combination is the title “The Topping.” For the choreography show (author show) where dance performances are crucial, endless collaborations with artists, concepts, tools, etc., from other genres suggest a new direction in dance for the expansion, possibility, and energy flow of Korean dance. Korean Dance X Street Dance X Pumba Chumba Intentions Chumba is a compound word of “chum” (dance) and pumba. Chumba and pumba are similar in that they are both one-man monodramas with theater of situations + dance, reflecting the contemporary mind. It is a dance of positive aesthetics to overcome the solitude caused by isolation and surging individualism by exploring the deep inner side of mankind, where endless attempts at exploration will be made in series to recover the beautiful, true form of inner mankind. Performance Details A grandmother appears. No, the grandmother is on stage. As a lady on stage, she unveils her life story of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in a clean yet bold manner, with detailed movements that only solo dances can display. A dream of the future and a body free in the past mix in space and time... Everything is mixed with no distinction between the stage and distance. So the dance begins.
