2022 Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra Chamber Music Series VI

행사 소개

Program Introduction This chamber music program mainly consists of pieces that were composed in the early 20 th century and will show what changes war brought to Western music through a variety of quintets composed in the same era. The Hindemith piece and the Prokofiev piece performed in part 1 were composed after World War I in the 1920s. Unlike traditional quintets before the war, every instrument in both pieces is of equal importance. Also, each movement has independent titles and personalities. This shows the doubts about the traditional format musicians had in the thick of a war where everything was destroyed. Hindemith ’ s quintet, which includes a jazz rhythm, shows U.S. influence. Prokofiev ’ s quintet, which has scarcity value, has six movements that each have a mystical air to them, like a fairy tale. With the harmony of colorful instruments, an entirely new sound was created that is neither Western modernism nor Russian traditionalism. Contrary to the suspenseful part 1, Vaughn Williams ’ quintet in part 2 guides us through the peaceful days before the war into the scenery of nature. In Williams ’ quintet, which follows the famous tradition of the “ Die Forelle ” quintet, a lyrical melody and a dynamic characteristic that can be found in his other pieces exist at the same time. The fact that 2022 is the 150 th anniversary of Williams ’ birth adds to the significance to this chamber music concert.
