From the Stirrings of Freedom in the 19th Century to the Resonance of the Here and Now in the 21st. Minjeong Shin Recital All the Piano Music in the World #2: Dreaming of a New Romanticism This recital shines a spotlight on composers who worked at the crossroads of Classicism and Romanticism, set against the historic era of the “Great Divergence” set in motion by the civil revolutions and the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century. As the wealth and power once concentrated in kings and aristocrats spread to a rising middle class and civil society began to take shape, music, literature, and art rode the breath of freedom and brought the great movement of Romanticism into bloom. Through the music of masters who poured buoyant hope for a new generation into their works, audiences can witness the first shoots of Romanticism budding within the order of Classicism. The first half opens with a Sonatina by Clementi, who laid the foundations of Classical piano technique, followed by a Nocturne and a Sonata by John Field, the creator of the nocturne, and Beethoven’s masterpiece, Piano Sonata No. 28, which moved beyond Classicism to raise the curtain on late Romanticism. The second half presents Schubert’s complete Moments musicaux, the pinnacle of lyrical beauty, and Weber’s Invitation to the Dance, which brilliantly elevates the Romantic dance to the piano. The program closes with selections from Preludes for Piano Solo by Korean composer Eunho Chang. Reaching beyond the Romanticism of the 19th century to the present day, the recital seeks to sing of a new Romanticism for the 21st century through the language of the piano.
