Viva Vivaldi in Venezia Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741), an Italian priest, composer, and violinist, was a musician who sought to make music more widely accessible. While he is widely known for nstrumental works isuch as The Four Seasons, famous concertos often regarded as pioneering examples of program music, he also devoted great effort to composing vocal music, including operas, cantatas, motets, and oratorios. Considering that he composed more than 600 cantatas, he might well be called the “King of the Cantata.” Through the performance of Vivaldi’s vocal works from various genres presented in this 96th Regular Concert, the audience will be able to gain a deeper appreciation of Baroque music through the contrasting style ( stile contrastato ) that characterizes the Baroque musical language.
