At the Boundary Between Light and Darkness. Whenever a darkness deeper than darkness descends, how many uncertain nights have we lain awake, unable to find rest no matter which way we turn? The weariness that staggers through the whirlwind of clamor is always searching for a faint glimmer of light, a way out. The pain we have carried, and the eyes that once looked upon those wounds, give way to a beautiful forgiveness before a light steeped in dazzling sunshine. In this recital, titled [Window of Light: Where the Light Shines Through], pianist Hongsup Lee travels from the Baroque through the Classical and Romantic eras to the present day. With a single piano, he offers the warm solace of light, as darkness melts away before the slowly breaking dawn. The program moves from piano works by Cherkassky and Reger, steeped in pitch-black tragedy, through Liszt’s Dante, a pilgrimage through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise that leaves a lingering afterglow of radiant light, to [Window of Light], a vision painted by Lee himself. Cradling the light of brilliant, radiant music, Lee tonight gently guides us, stumbling and searching for a place of refuge, toward the place where the light can be seen.
