Having dramatized directly into a libreto, the novel has been expanded its arena into auditory art consisting of reading, dialogue, song and instrumental ensemble. It consists of three parts same as the original book, with an addition of a prologue and an epilogue, unfolding the course of events in sequence. The tenor, transformed to an Ungeziefer created by Kafka's literary imagination, expresses the words of Gregor, the protagonist who lost his voice in non-verbal terms, and sometimes uses human language with song and monologue. It reveals the contradiction that the emotion and an identity of Gregor as a human, son, brother, and office worker is remained even though he has lost human characteristics. The readers take the other roles than the protagonist, and lead the overall story by reciting, bridging music and the audience with text. Modern music materials expressed in many different formats and sounds render the bold 'world of imagination' so-called 'Kafkaesque' in a non-traditional sound. As the protagonist's reality changes, the music theme gradually varies, and the characters' emotional fighting spirit and internal conflict are gradually and slowly revealed through dissonance chords, irregularly changing rhythms, mode transitions, and heterogeneous and surreal tones. Each instrument partially symbolizes the character, and some are organized in duet to imply an ambivalent structure of homogeneity and heterogeneity of the characters depending on the changing circumstances. The Ensemble has been engaging in adapting works that convey social messages with literary significance into musical drama to put on the stage. It helps the audience to explore the human psychology and backgrounds contained in literary works expressed through music so that they can independently experience musical literature and literary music at the same time, thinking deep about the themes in a new way. 주최: 세종문화회관
